The power of Music

Bed Boys

There is a song that every year, at Christmas, the time of year when we all feel better (or at least I have always heard that we should feel so), always jumps out: "We are the world".

“We are the world” is a song of 1985, engraved by a group of 21 famous and important American singers for Africa. Purpose of the song was collecting funds for Ethiopia struck at that time by a severe famine. “USA for Africa” was born from the idea of the singer Harry Belafonte, inspired by Band Aid, a group of English singers who the previous year had recorded the single “Do They Know it's Christmas” (always for charity) that had achieved a great worldwide success.
Harry Belafonte and his manager Ken Kragen involved other singers, while Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote the song, which was later produced by the legendary Quincy Jones. The success of “We Are the World” was planetarium and about 50 million dollars were collected. The song won the Grammy Award as "Song of the Year", as "Record of the Year" and "Best pop performance by a duo or vocal group”.
The funds were devolved to the population of Ethiopia, troubled by a period of famine.
Even though for the younger generations a lot of the original performers have already been forgotten, their idea has not grown old.

Even 31 years after its release, “We are the World” keeps making our hair stand on end! The passion, dedication, harmony and sheer beauty of the song make it a complete anthem and it should remain in history and become a world anthem.

There comes a time when we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
and it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all
We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We are all a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know,
Love is all we need
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
Well, send them your heart so they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand

We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, let's realize that a change can only come
When we stand together as one
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
